Short Summary
I suffered from Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) in 2009.

Now I'm doing what GBS stopped me doing for a while: running! I'm going to run 52 races in 2015 to raise $25,000 for the awesome work of the GBS/CIDP Foundation. Please support me and follow my journey at!

GBS affects 1 in 100,000 people. It begins with weakness or tingling sensations in the legs, and can spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase until muscles cannot be used at all and the person is almost totally paralyzed. It can be life threatening.

My experience with GBS was tough. In a few days, I went from athletic to struggling to walk to the mailbox. It took too long to get diagnosed and I didn't know where to get help -- it was mentally very tough. I couldn't look after my family, and I wasn't able to work full-time. It took me over a year to get back to even close to normal, and around two years to run again.

The GBS/CIDP Foundation is doing important work. 100% of the funds raised will be donated to the Foundation. They help make sure that people who get this rare condition are supported and educated. They're funding research, and lobbying for the right health care too.

What We Need & What You Get
Here's the plan:

I have raised over $23,000 for the GBS/CIDP Foundation through IndieGoGo.  My total goal is $52,000 in 2015.

I will count anything that has a timer as one race (one-milers, 5ks, 10ks, ten-milers, half-marathons. Heck, I might even run a marathon)  Every cent will go to the GBS/CIDP Foundation. You donate here, and the money goes straight to the Foundation. You'll get a 501(c)(3) tax deductible receipt  I'll personally pay all of the expenses associated with the fundraising
If you donate at any of the perk levels, you'll get a cool gift directly from me.

The Impact
"The GBS/CIDP Foundation depends on our members to help raise funds for those who suffer from GBS, CIDP, and related conditions. We are excited that Hugh is running 52 races this year to raise awareness of our work and, importantly, raise money for those who need our help. We ask you to donate to his campaign and support his fundraising." -- Lisa Butler, Director of Development and Marketing, GBS/CIDP Foundation.

You will personally be helping fight a condition that affected Franklin D. Roosevelt, Joseph Heller, Andy Griffith, Alistair Clarkson, and Lucky Oceans.

You will be helping with education for those suffering GBS and related conditions. When you're hit with GBS, it can devastate your body in hours -- it's tough physically and mentally, and getting support from people who understand is critical. Knowing the GBS/CIDP Foundation was there was incredibly important in my recovery.

You can help fund research to understand more about GBS. What causes GBS isn't well understood -- it's thought that after an infection something might trigger your immune system to attack your nervous system. Today, there's no cure or treatment for GBS -- the only thing that helps sometimes is blood transfusions. We need to know more about what causes GBS, and to help those who suffer from it.

Importantly, you can help the Foundation lobby to ensure people get access to the health care they need. We need to make sure that vulnerable people aren't ruined by this condition.

Other Ways You Can Help
Some of you can't afford to contribute cash, but that doesn't mean you can't help:

Please help get the word out and make some noise about my campaign -- share it on Facebook, Twitter, or other favorite social media sites. Invite me to come and speak to your organization
Interview me about GBS and my campaign, and spread the word.  That's it!

Please join me in fighting GBS!
