Watching my son struggle with PTSD has been incredibly heartbreaking and challenging. When the PTSD was at its worse, hospitalization was necessary. We struggled as a family when he was away from us those months. After thorough testing, multiple services and supports have been added to his education plan and overall he's beginning to function better. However, there are still times when he can be found hiding under his desk or other piece of furniture, hands to his ears, shaking. Times when he's too afraid to go to the bathroom alone and wets himself or he is scared to transition to the next class. Other days when in the fight or flight mode, he chooses to fight and has to be restrained by trained faculty and staff until the episode has passed. We discovered that he feels the most secure and happy when he's with animals, particularly dogs. After speaking with his doctors and therapists, it was decided that a therapy dog would be a good solution. A therapy dog would not only be for emotional comfort, but could check the bathroom or classroom ahead of my son to let him know it's safe to enter. One that could wake him when he's having nightmares and alert us when he's having panic attacks. Such a dog comes with a cost. After many hospital expenses, our funds are dwindling and the initial fees associated with the dog are daunting. However, this dog could be life changing to my son and take him to the next level of security and freedom. We will be able to afford all the maintenance required for a dog going forward such as food, vet visits, etc. It's the initial costs which include training, transportation of dog to us from out of state and handling fees/paperwork that we are asking for help. Please consider a donation of any amount, no amount is too small. I thank you for considering the therapy dog for my son.
