Review of DJI Phantom 3 Standard in SpanishHome » Blog » Reviews » Review of DJI Phantom 3 Standard in Spanish

As the drone market grows, DJI also does so by maintaining a remarkable market share of more than 70%. The new Phantom 3 Standard (P3S) is the latest addition to the popular Phantom 3 series and tries to reach a new audience thanks to its features that makes it even easier to fly at an affordable price of USD $ 499 (reference price in US before taxes and transportation). I recently visited DJI's main offices in China to see how this new drone compares to its older brothers, Phantom 3 Professional (P3P) and Phantom 3 Advanced (P3A). Let's take a look.

Opening the box

As the P3S is part of the Phantom 3 series, the package is similar to the other products in the series and is perfectly designed to be a compact package. The box includes the drone, a remote control, propellers, a charger, spare accessories and user manual. You only have to install the propellers and you are ready to fly !, however for safety reasons, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the product manual before flying and avoid flying in areas not allowed.

A lighter version

While the P3S is similar to the other products in the series, one difference is that it does not include the visual positioning system that others have. This makes the drone lighter, with a total weight of 1216 grams, therefore, easier to carry and carry.

Improved remote control

The remote control included with the P3S has been redesigned to be smaller and lighter than the P3P and P3A. As it is a product intended for beginners, the remote control has been simplified with fewer buttons, making it easier and more intuitive to use.

Unlike the P3P and P3A, there is no need to use a USB cable to connect the remote control to your mobile device, because communication happens through wireless connection. The P3S supports live streaming in 720p high definition and is capable of transmitting in a range of 0.6 miles (1 km). An improvement over the Phantom 2 Vision + (P2V +) is that the new Wi-Fi extender is integrated with the P3S remote control and both share the same battery. This unique design simplifies the use of the control as you will not have to load the two parts independently.

2.7K Video Recording

The highlight of the P3S is its camera, which is capable of recording video in 2.7K HD (2704 × 1520 pixels), something not commonly seen in drones for beginners. Compared to the other two models of Phantoms, the P3P is capable of recording 4K video, while the P3A records at 1080p.

The P3S is equipped with a wide-angle lens with 94⁰ FOV (visual field), f / 2.8 aperture and takes pictures at 12 megapixels, either JPEG or RAW DNG format for those who want to preserve the maximum amount of detail In their photos.

How does it behave in practice? Let's go fly and look .

I brought with me the P3S, P3P, P3A, P2V + and GoPro Hero 4 Black to capture the same scene using the automatic mode. The result is quite surprising.

GoPro Hero 4 Black
We see that in the images taken by P2V + and GoPro Hero 4 Black the colors have been relatively saturated and are slightly overexposed, there are also distortions present towards the edges of the photos. On the other hand, the photos taken by the three Phantom 3 are relatively uniform in their style and it is difficult to differentiate which photograph is captured by the P3S and which is the P3A. It is clear that DJI has worked hard to make the P3S a good product as are the P3P and P3A.

Previous images show the difference between the five cameras. We can see that the DJI cameras have a higher resolution than the Gopro Hero 4 Black; If you look at the top edge of the building, you can see that the photograph taken by GoPro is a little blurry. When we look at the bricks, we can see that the image captured by the P2V + is too sharp over-sharpened and that there is no chromatic noise. However, in the photo captured by the GoPro Hero 4 Black, it is not even possible to see each brick individually.

More photos taken by the P3S:

When it comes to photographs, the performance of the P3S camera is almost the same as the P3P and P3A. When it comes to video recording, the P3S records video at 2.7K, which is higher quality than the P3A's 1080p resolution, but lower than the P3P's 4K resolution.

More powerful propulsion system

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard comes with a new propulsion system. From the outside, we can easily see that the motors in the P3S are different from those of the P3P and P3A. When it comes to drone navigation, the P3S is more responsive and faster to react to control.

The P3S has the same 4S LiPo battery 4,480mAh as the P3P and P3A, but achieves a longer flight time of up to 25 minutes, the longest in the series, thanks to its lower weight.

Single mobile application

The P3S comes with the new DJI GO application, which is another of its highlights. DJI has been constantly pioneering and has been adding new features to its applications and with the DJI GO application, the P3S receives new features such as Auto Takeoff and Auto Landing, Back to Home, Real-time display in HD resolution and manual control of the shutter. In the near future, a firmware update will give the P3S more intelligent features, such as the Follow Me and Points of Interest possibility.

I think after reading this analysis, you can differentiate the strengths of the P3S and its new features and improvements, such as 2.7K video recording, lighter weight and 0.6 miles (1km) of transmission distance and The new and improved propulsion system. The price has also been improved, reaching USD $ 799 (reference price in the US), significantly lower than the price of P2V + at launch.

Let's compare the 3 products of the Phantom 3 Series. The price of the P3A could confuse you, since it sells for USD $ 999 (reference price in the US before taxes and transportation), but can only record video at 1080p compared to 2.7K of P3S. The P3A is equipped with a visual positioning system to fly in an interior and has a longer transmission distance, so you will have to decide if this is worth according to the price difference. P3P is called a "simplified Inspire", because it has impressive functions like 4K video, although it does not support two simultaneous controls. However, if your budget is around the $ 1,259 that costs P3P (US pre-tax price and tax) and your requirements regarding video quality are high, Then P3P is a perfect fit for you. To get the best cost-benefit ratio in the market, I recommend that you choose the P3S on the P3A. The same thing happens if you are a beginner.
