A boy with a broken heart!
Justin is a fun, outgoing, caring, loving 11 year old boy. He loves to play board games, video games, baseball, dance and be with family and friends. He looks and acts like any other boy. But under all the smiles, giggles, and love he is a Survivor, a Warrior, a Fighter and My Hero. Justin was born with 7 different CHD’s. Justin is a fighter in dealing with this roadblock in his life. He is also a teacher. He has taught us love, patience, joy, faith, gratitude, and to rely on our Heavenly Father. When Justin was born he wasn’t breathing. I saw him briefly before they took him immediately to the NICU. Once they put the breathing tube in he wasn’t going to have any of that. He ripped it out screaming, filling his lungs with air. Justin spent two weeks in the hospital. To help them understand my sister explained to my nephews and nieces that Justin’s heart was broken and the Dr’s needed to fix it. So he is a boy with a Broken Heart. He is beating the odds one beat at a time. At 1 ½ months Justin went in for a heart cath. He had a cyanotic spell and was rushed to the ICU. He was in and out of the hospital for more heart caths for a couple of weeks, til it was determined that he needed the Glenn procedure soon. Justin was a fighter and he proved it. Handing your 2 month old baby over to a Dr you’ve only known for 10 minutes is difficult. Seeing him right after surgery was tough. IV’s, monitors, medicines, bandages shouldn’t belong on such a tiny boy. But, Justin fought hard and was home with O2 within a week.
At age 2 he was scheduled for another heart cath. It was determined that he would need the Fontan procedure in the near future. Again I handed my little boy off and anxiously waited for news. The Fontan was hard on Justin The fighter in him didn’t’ give up though. On the 3rd day he went back to surgery to have a pacemaker placed. He was in complete heart block and became pacer dependent. He fought hard the next two weeks and was able to come home with a little O2. His Dr’s said to let him be a boy and we do. We don’t hold him back. In doing so he has broken two different leads on two different pacers which have had to be replaced; one at 4 and the other at 9 years of age. As Justin has gotten older he has become more aware of his heart. He worries about his heart and pacemaker. He is afraid they will just stop one day. On those days we try to get through with one positive word at a time.Justin is a fighter; he won’t give up on his broken heart.
