When Alexander was almost 3 months old he got a fever and we took him to our local children’s er. They heard a murmur and sent us to see a cardiologist but told us it probably wasn’t anything major. One week later we took him to cardiology and they performed an EKG and an echocardiogram, I knew what both were but never had seen them used. The EKG looked normal but the echo was completely different. The echo showed that the had many complex chds and would need open heart surgery to save his life. He had a chest cath 2 weeks later, and when he was 4 months 1 week I handed my baby over to a surgeon I had spent 5 minutes with. Surgery was almost 9 hours long and he came through it successfully but it wasn’t an easy recovery and what was planned as a 2 week stayed turned into a 3 month stay along with 2 additional chest caths and a 2nd open heart surgery. He has been doing well but has has 2 additional chest caths and a 3rd open heart surgery. We know he will need more surgeries in the future but we enjoy the good days and deal with the bad as they come.
