At my 20 week ultrasound, like too many heart families we weren’t finding out if we’d have a boy or a girl but a baby that would need a mended heart. Feeling crushed and devasted by the news little did I know I wasn’t alone. My son Luke diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot was 1in 110 children born with a CHD. When Luke was born I didn’t just become a mom but a heart mom. That meant I was his advocate, his caretaker, nurse and so much more. At a week old Luke had a shunt placed as a temporary fix to his heart and at 9 months old his first open heart surgery. My son is my hero, my inspiration and yes I love to share his story to help other heart families but I know that every heart warrior, past, present and future all have amazing stories of an endless fight with CHD. With many bumps in the road over the past 7 years with Luke and seeing him overcoming many things including death twice it only makes me fight harder for Luke, all kids and adults with CHD and remembering all our CHD Angel warriors. Every CHD story is a story of fight and heart so let’s embrace them all.
