30 years ago, my parents were told their beautiful, 2 day old baby girl was born with a severe heart defect, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, and because there were not any known options for repair, she would die in about a week. They were given the option to leave me at the hospital or take me home. After much prayer and diligent research, my family was introduced to a cardiac surgeon in Philadelphia, PA who had created a corrective open heart surgery to repair hearts like mine.
At nine days old, I had my first open heart surgery. After about a month long stay for recovery, we went back to Texas. When I was 18 months old, my parents and I were back in Philadelphia for my 2nd surgery. At the time, in 1986, I was the 16th person to undergo the complete operation, and the 11th to survive.
I have gone one to live a very “normal” life. I’m the oldest of 4 kids. Was an active child/teenager, and went on to college after graduating from high school and got my degree in family and child development. I have been married to my amazing husband for a year and a half, and am in my 7th year of teaching.
I love meeting and chatting with families and kids of HLHS and all CHDs. I am just as encouraged by their stories as they are mine ❤️
