I was about 20-22 weeks pregnant with Liam when doctors told my husband and I that our unborn son would be born Double Outlet Right Ventricle. It was the worst day of my life, the day I experienced true pain. As the doctor drew a picture of “his” heart all I could do was cry. I didn’t hear a thing after she told me about his heart defect. I felt as if though my heart was ripped out of my chest and I didn’t know how I could keep going, knowing my son would have to face so much pain soon after being born. We were sent to see more specialist and that is when we were told the function of his heart wasn’t good. His heart wasn’t pumping like a “normal” heart. Appointment after appointment there was no hope for Liam. They diagnosed him with heterotaxy syndrome( ALL his organs are a mirror imagine) and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. I asked the doctor: will my baby have a “normal” life after all the surgeries? I wasn’t given hope, not once. When I got closer to my due date I was told Liam would more then likely need a heart transplant BUT they HAD to do an amniocentesis to see if he had any chromosome abnormalities. If he did have such abnormalities he wouldn’t “qualify” to be on the transplant list. We declined because at the end of the day there was nothing we could do. We “planned” for the worse to happen. Liam was born August 2015 and a week after he was born he was placed on a heart transplant list. The function of his heart didn’t improve and transplant was his only option. As we sat down while doctors told us all the risks of having a transplant all I could think of was am making the right choice? The wait, we were told, would be anywhere from 4-6 months BUT the heart could come ANY DAY. I didn’t think Liam would make it to transplant. He was so sick months before transplant. We were lossing hope and in January 2016 we got a heart. We waited 5 months and 5days for this little heart. This miracle, Liam, has gone through so much and still continues to smile. Mr. Liam is still recovering from his heart transplant. He has shown me so much and I’ve learned so much from this little human!
