Once upon a time, it was a tic-tac-toe board. Then, we called it “the pound” symbol. Sometime over the last few years, this symbol has morphed into the ever-famous “Hashtag”. The Hashtag has taken the social media world by storm…with no signs of it letting up. Therefore, if you don’t use the Hashtag, you will be one of the few left in the dust! Twitter was the first social media platform to embrace the hashtag, but it can now be found on virtually all social media platforms.
What is a hashtag?
Hashtags are a cross hatch symbol that allow people to mark posts or comments by topic. It is a form of metadata tagging. For example, if I’m writing a “how to” about Crowdfunding, I’ll put #crowdfunding and #fundraising at the end of my tweet or post. Then, when people do a search, all posts about crowdfunding and fundraising will populate. Hashtags make it easy for people to discuss and exchange ideas through different social media platforms.
Why should I use a hashtag?
Using a hashtag allows people to categorize posts by their search criteria. With the millions of tweets and facebook posts generated daily, this is a way to search for relevant information on a specific topic. You should use the hashtag so that people can find your posts and updates. Google now searches social media platforms and displays those results when you search for a particular category. Using hashtags when sharing your campaign just makes it visible to more people than in your immediate social circle.
Where exactly do you put a hashtag?
The hashtag can appear anywhere in a tweet (or social media post). Use it when you want to target a specific group. Using generic hashtags like #fundraising can be good, but #PediatricCancer would be far more specific and target that group.
Notice that we used hashtags for “crowdfunding” and “nevada”. This will ensure that people searching for topics on crowdfunding will find this…but, also people looking for Nevada news. You can put them at the beginning of a title, throughout (like this example), or at the end.
What platforms support hashtags?
Most social media platforms support hashtags. Here’s a quick list:
I’m sure there are many more…but, these would be the most relevant platforms that you will likely share your campaign on.
How many hashtags should you use?
Don’t use a hashtag with EVERY word you type. Using 2-3 hashtags per social share would be a great guideline to follow. You want people to be able to read what you’re typing, but you also want to “hashtag” key words that you would want targeted in a search.
Take advantage of trending hashtags that relate to your content and use them when sharing your message. This will make you part of an already popular conversation.
If you haven’t started a crowdfunding campaign yet, think about how you will use hashtags in your social sharing. If you HAVE already started a campaign, don’t worry. Start today by researching trending hashtags and how you can incorporate your campaign into the conversation.
