In 2001, I was 18 and developing photos for Longs Drugs. I can across suspicious photos and alerted the police. I helped apprehend the suspect and help thwart a bombing, 2 years in planning, scheduled to happen the next morning at a local community college. It’s estimated I saved atleast 200 people! I am in wikipedia under DeAnza College bomb threat! I had my 15 minutes: flown to NY and on the morning talk shows, received the key to the city of San Jose, countless awards and personal praises from would-be victims and family members!
Almost exactly 10 years later (I’m 28), I found myself living in Minneapolis on a whim. Working two jobs, waitress and at a thrift store, I found myself slowly becoming crosseyed. Unable to drive within a couple weeks, I received an MRI, resulting in the find of a tumor in my head! I was shocked and ready for a fight. Three and a half years later, brain surgery, eye surgery, chemo, radiation through my brain, countless blood draws, countless MRIs, 61 pills ingested every 24 hours, living on a hospital bed in my parents living room, gaining 50 pounds, walking with a cane, throat paralysis, brain swelling, tinnitus, and generally being in my own hell, I finally received news that I was on the road to beating my plight.
While I was my sickest, my whole family and the very college I helped save ten years prior, held a fundraiser for me and immensely aided in my comfort and well being through this frightful time. I am forever grateful!
Here I am, 2016, just graduated to MRIs ever year as opposed to every six months and doing amazing! Besides my constant lazy left eye (the surgery was unable to cure what the tumor and brain swelling had caused) and my hearing aid/ringing left ear, I am living life! Able to do this I never thought I could again! It’s been a struggle regaining strength and adjusting to my ‘new normal’, but I’m proud of myself! Better yet, I’m in love!
