The whole family had a cold. My daughters, son and I were coughing and sneezing and my husband was having trouble breathing. After many tests he found out that the “cold” went right to his heart. His heart was working at half of what it should be. I remember the doctor telling us that one of three things would happen. 1. It would get better on it’s own. 2. It would stay like it was. 3. It would get worse and he would need a heart transplant. That was the scariest news I have ever heard. How could this happen, it was just a simple, everyday cold? I remember he could not lift anything and had to rest a lot to see if he could get his heart to heal. After a few months, his heart had gotten a little better but still not 100%. His doctor decided to put in a defibrillator as a precaution, which is piece of mind to me. If his heart should stop, it will shock him and get it beating again. Whenever friends and family ask how he is feeling he usually says, “he feels pretty good,” and then I say, “but if he makes me mad, I do have the remote control to his defibrillator and can shock him whenever I want.” They look at me shocked and say, “really?” We laugh and say, “no, not really.” We do make that joke a lot but I think it helps ease the tension of the severity of the problem. Life is short and you never know when something so simple can turn into something that is life threatening.
