Last year, I received a call that turned my world upside down. My mother had a sense of urgency in her voice as she said, “your grandfather had a heart attack today.” I remember sitting down on my bed as the tears starting streaming down my face. It was his third one in ten years, but I knew this one was more serious because he was in his mid-80s now. I made the decision to fly back home to help my mother with him in the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, my grandfather seemed fine. He was still laughing, smiling and doing all of the things he normally does. However, the cardiologist came in and pulled my mother and I aside. He told us that my grandfather’s heart was failing and that he gave him a month to live. My mother decided that she wanted to bring him home so we could take care of him in his last days. It was in that moment where I decided to withdrawal from graduate school to be able to spend time with my family during this difficult time. Defying the odds, my grandfather lived two months after his heart attack, fueled by his love of life and everything it has to offer. He sadly passed away in our living room on Christmas eve 2014. Seeing one of my own family members suffer from heart disease has driven me to pursue a deeper understanding of the condition.
