My story began twenty-one years ago when my second son was born with an undiagnosed heart defect. Finally, after two months, we were rushed by ambulance to a hospital three hours away and my husband and I were told our son was in congestive heart failure and to take him home to die. We refused and insisted something be done to save Alex.
Given a 5% chance to survive, our son was given up for lost by many but not by my family. The night before he went into surgery, a kind nurse allowed me to hold him and I told him to fight and to be strong. The next morning the same nurse allowed me to wash him before surgery – the last time I would see his chest without a scar.
Alex lived and I wrote an article for the nursing magazine my husband subscribed to. It was accepted for publication while my son underwent his second open-heart surgery. I had always wanted to be a writer but never expected my first published work to be advice for nurses in the ICU.
Because I needed to know more about my son’s heart defect and nothing was available for parents of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, I put together a book. When no one would publish it, my husband and I created Baby Hearts Press and we published it. It has been shipped around the world to other heart families.
In September 2013, a producer called me to say he’d seen my resume online and he thought I should have my own radio show. On 11/12/13 “Heart to Heart with Anna,” a talk radio show for the congenital heart defect community delivered its first broadcast. Because of that radio show, a mother in Africa found me on the Internet when she needed help for her son. I forwarded her letter to two heart dads in Africa who also found me because of the radio show. Because of the tenacity of one of those dads, the child was flown to Texas and given lifesaving, open-heart surgery.
I drove to Dallas to meet the mother and son – something I never would have thought could happen 21 years ago when I was just a shy mother living in Texas raising my family. Because of my son’s heart defect and his strength, I felt challenged to reach out to others. Because of the Internet and the ability we have to communicate all over the globe, we can move mountains with our words.
I feel like my whole life brought me to the place I am now where I have the ability to reach out to others and where the words of my Guests on “Heart to Heart with Anna” have the ability to make someone’s life a little bit better and, maybe by working together, we can even save a life.
