September is back to School Season which means families are rushing to the local office supply store to purchase all the items on their back-to-school lists. Today, children are expected to not only come to school ready to learn with a backpack, pencils, notebooks, and calculators, but to also bring supplies to share with the entire classroom.
Some families will spend $100 or more per child to cover all of the required items, which often include specific notebooks, pencils, hand sanitizer and tissues for their classrooms. Families with more than one child are spending double or triple that…which adds up to be a pretty big hit for one family. And some families just can’t do it. For some families who are trying to pay rent and buy groceries, that money is hard to come by. Although the big bulk of supplies are requested by teachers to start the new school year, it doesn’t stop when September is over. There are costs to attend class field trips and fund multiple class projects. For families that can’t afford these expenses, their children are left feeling isolated and could potentially miss out on valuable learning opportunities.
Are there families in your community that need help buying the necessary supplies so their children can receive the education they deserve? Start a Move Your Mountain campaign and raise money to help a child fill their backpack with the tools and confidence needed to learn and thrive in school.
