Rebecca was born a fighter. She fought through being born too early and too small, having her chest open for a week and a half, being on the ventilator for a month, through four open-heart surgeries, one abdominal surgery and multiple caths. She fought through not eating, not crawling, not walking and not talking. Nothing comes easily for Rebecca. She has to work harder for everything. She has had physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special help with reading and with math. But she NEVER gives up. She doesn’t complain about things being harder for her, because she doesn’t KNOW that things are harder for her. All she has ever known is trying hard, so it is her nature to fight for everything. Rebecca was so painfully shy when she was 3-4 years old. She wouldn’t talk to anybody, she hid behind me when people would talk to her. She’s still quiet, but last year she won the friendship award for her class! My little Rebecca was recognized for being “kind, helpful, trustworthy, considerate, empathetic, sensitive to the needs of others, inclusive of everyone at all times, and making others feel good about themselves”. Wow! But then again, of course she is empathetic and sensitive, she knows what it is like to be different. Rebecca is not the most outwardly loving child, she wasn’t held much as an infant, in fact there was one 25-day stretch when she wasn’t held at all. So when she tells us that she loves us and when we get hugs from her, they are the sweetest because we know that they are felt with her whole half-heart! It is not possible for me to explain how much her family loves her. When she is happy, we can’t help but smile, and when she hurts, we all wish that it was us instead. There is a line in “A Knight’s Tale” that goes, “Your men love you. If I knew nothing else about you, that would be enough.” That explains Rebecca, we love her endlessly and that is really all anybody needs to know. She is our warrior and our hero.
