David Wain had a purpose. At 13 weeks pregnant I was so excited to hear my baby boys heart beat for the first time! But it was also when the doctor told me something wasn’t right and she wanted me to see a specialist. A world of worry and denial dropped onto my shoulders. At 18 weeks pregnant David Wain was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. His left ventricle did not have enough blood flow to form properly. Thank God my mother-in-law went with me because I froze and she knew all of the questions to ask. The doctor called my husband and explained it all to him because I couldn’t. She told him it was not my fault but I felt that it had to be something I did.
We did our research, a lot of research, and found the best surgeon for us in San Antonio. We moved in with my parents and started setting up visits with all of the doctors.
David was strong and healthy so long as he was in me and I wanted to keep him that way for as long as possible but God had other plans. David was born 4 weeks early, on May 28, 2015, and not a single one of his doctors was able to be there for his arrival!
Because he was so early he was taken up to the NICCU and treated for lung disease. At 7 days old his heart could no longer keep up and they took him in for his first surgery. We prayed so very hard and reached out to every prayer chain we could. David survived his surgery and began the long process of recovery.
It took him longer than normal to come off of the ventilator and that or the surgery caused some damage to his left vocal cord. Now we had a whole new set of fears. With all that he was already going through what if we couldn’t hear him cry! Thank God 2 weeks later we got to hear him cry!
Once he recovered from his first surgery the focus turned to putting as much weight on him as possible which presented a new problem. David had some wicked reflux he couldn’t hold in even the gentlest food. They really pushed hard for a g-tube but we refused. Why put him through yet another surgery? he spent the next 5 months flirting with the nurses and being so very happy. He still had a lot of problems with eating and he caught 3 colds, so we felt that we made the right choice. At 4 months old David needed a Cath lab to try to buy him more time before his second surgery. I didn’t find out until a few days later that they had to use a defibrillator on him! I saw red that I wasn’t told. At just before 6 months old David needed his second surgery. He survived! But a week later we knew there was something wrong. They sent him for a cath lab and found that his body had created a secondary pulmonary artery. The surgeon performed a surgery between his ribs and closed off the new artery. At 6 months 2 days old we lost David wain! He was gone. Our biggest regret was that he had only been able to go outside once in his entire short life. So we wrapped him up and took him down to the hospital garden and cried for him. The pain was so overwhelming that I couldn’t breathe.
We knew and know that God chose us to be David Wain’s parents for a reason. David reached so many people! He brought prayer back into schools. He got non believers to pray for God’s help! And now he has reached you. God loves you. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into David’s short life.
